April 17th 2007, will mark
the 50th Anniversary of USW LU 5541. On April 4, 1957, the employees of the
former Southwestern Ohio Steel, Inc. & Fabricated Steel Inc. Company, now Misa
Metals Inc., were duly organized into a Local Union of the United Steelworkers
of America. On April 17, 1957, the United Steelworkers of America
International Office in Pittsburgh, PA, issued the workers their Charter
creating USWA Local Union 5541. At the time of the organizing effort, there
were approximately 85 workers at the Main Plant and the Fabrication Facility.
The Locals first officers were President Virgil V. DeLano of Hamilton, OH,
Vice-President Richard M. Woodward of Fairfield, OH, Recording Secretary John D.
Lay of Hamilton, OH, Financial Secretary Frank B. Johnson, of Hamilton, OH,
Treasurer Stanley Gabbard of College Corner, OH, Guide Clayton Handley of
Hamilton, OH and Inside Guard James Lewis, of Hamilton, OH.
From its inception, the
Local has focused on the preservation of family supportive jobs, healthcare, a
living wage, education, along with justice and dignity in the workplace. Over
the years, LU 5541 has grown into a diverse local of 300 members with 6 Units.
The Local’s Units are Butler County Extended Care, Duke Energy, Martin Marietta
Aggregates, Middletown Tube, Misa Metals Inc., Misa Metals Processing.
Thru Solidarity, dedication
and commitment, LU 5541 has prospered for 50 years. Happy Birthday LU 5541.
